Freaky Friday

We have all had those days that start with an eerie feeling from the time the sunrises, only to play itself out as a day from "Twilight Zone". The October Fall air was crisp and the sun shone brightly this morning as I began my morning ritual of making breakfasts and lunches for my children. Flipping on the news as a voice of company as usual I was informed a "Sig Alert" on the nearby freeway, which means the traffic always overflows onto our street. I had no idea what I was in for in the simple task of getting my kids to school on time, both schools being less than 2 miles away. A Tractor trailer truck had Jack knifed causing two of the four lanes on the Interstate to close for morning rush hour traffic. Hearing the constant thump of news helicopters should have been a loud enough indicator. Thankfully my son loves to be early to school and because of this he made it on time, since he would have had a conniption fit considering his obsession with time (whew!). I had to take a 12 mile detour to get around to the school (with traffic) which made the drive 25 minutes long! When I finally made it back home to take my daughter to school the traffic had snarled even more, spilling onto every conceivable surface street in our town. We subsequently walked to school and were passing cars on foot, which made me understand how road rage can occur. I, being the eternal optimist, laughed it off. It was quite a scene! The morning walk was invigorating for both my daughter and I, when life gives you lemons...make lemonade!
I worked for a client today and was terribly efficient, and by that I mean, I work smarter, not harder and am not able to bill for the lightening productivity-oh well!

After work, while waiting for my son's bell to ring I was reading in my car as is normal when I received a phone call from his school, "uh-oh", I thought. It was a recorded message from the principle that there were shots fired at students at a nearby elementary school, and that the school was on "lock down", it was a confusing message, one that a parent should never hear. We live in a very tightly woven community where in Small Town, USA, that just doesn't happen. I will never understand why anyone would take a gun to end someone's life, except in self-defense. I have nothing against guns, in the proper hands. As I received phone calls from concerned friends I learned that a young (maybe teenager) had opened fire on the playground of the elementary school, wielding a 'jack-o-lantern' wearing all black. A nearby construction worker saw the suspect trying to reload from his car and jumped in his truck, knocked him down, and as I was told "administered a bit of street justice" until the police arrived. A complete brave hero whose actions return my faith in the "stranger" nearby and the protective nature we all have within us. He should be commended in some special way, I am certain this thought is echoed throughout our community.
Two 7 (seven) year old children were flown via medical helicopter to a Children's Hospital with "minor injuries", I bet they didn't know when they went to school today they would get a ride in a helicopter, both were in good spirits, but not without trauma.
An obvious question-who in the $%^& thinks they have the right, is powerful enough, or justified by hurting innocent children? As an American I know we don't have the best reputation in many areas to other countries around the world, but I don't really care what they think. I am a PROUD American citizen, the romance of freedom and justice still prevails to all of us in this beautiful country. This archaic, anarchist behavior does exist, but with citizens like that construction worker, the strong will survive, justice will be served, and tolerance will be reserved for those that are contributing to society, not on a warpath at the expense of innocent children.

Clear Ice

It’s Elementary-Right? Making a Perfectly Clear Ice Cube Image by Christian Bickle fingalo via Wikimedia Commons. Making ice is elementary right? The purely magical yet scientifically stable process of changing the state of matter is of course not new but still shape-shiftingly neat and we are still learning the basics, apparently. So how about making a perfectly clear ice cube? It sounds pretty basic, almost like a harmless junior high school science class experiment, right? Yet it's not exactly basic or harmless. In fact if you're thinking that you have certainly been able to make clear ice before now, it was quite likely a complete accident-just like all great scientific discoveries are made! Yet unless you are fully equipped with a lot of patience and endless free time with some assistance of using everyday household equipment -you too can achieve the pursuit of the perfect clear ice cube! Resolutions are for quitters

I have not quit.  A lot of people quit this time of year. I have started 2017 with ‘I’, thereby breaking my own ‘rules’right here.  While every great blog writer it seems has quit this year-my inkwell is still full of uncoagulated blood. I suppose this should mean more room in some invisible Blog-o-Sphere for me, but I am not in some ‘ great ’ category so it only means less inspiration for me (and admittedly a slimy sinking feeling that perhaps I am about to give up). Neverthemore, I am still sitting here typing away, writing things not read, acquiring more debt every waking moment, and stacking up the disappointment of those closest to me. Towering.  The main difference between working at invisible arts every single day and a low paying 'part-time' service job, aside from adding to my invaluable social security would include; precious time away from my (Frmr.) Stray Cat (Editor in Large)-resulting in a serious decline in his treat consumption, a total voi...

Native American

Photo by By Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859-1928) (http://www.scvhistory.com/scvhistory/hs3008.htm) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons In this Age of Innovation and Information infiltration, it still amazes me when I learn new history. Aside from the blatant oxymoron, what I mean is, when I uncover what seems to be a significant piece of human or cultural history that should have been learned during the accrual of basic education- it feels like Ive been lied to, important information has been withheld and I feel ripped off- why didn’t I know this ?  Ultimately, Historians have a vast responsibility with Father Time as a heavyweight opponent and infinite miles to cover. I remember watching an episode of Jeopardy where one contestant was a Smallsville Highschool History teacher and he relayed a story about his students challenging him to teach his syllabus backwards-alleging that he would not make it to World War II-they were correct. Those omnipotent teachers only ...
